Every year, Lake Forest Church opens the doors to offer food & emergency shelter to the unhoused during our coldest months through Room in the Inn. The expanded goal includes offering a loving relationship between individuals experiencing homelessness and the individuals at Lake Forest Church. The person may come into the program feeling the label of homeless, but through this program their “label” is transformed into neighbor!

Neighbors are registered and checked in at the Day Services Center each evening starting at 4:30pm. Assignment priorities are families with children, single women and then men. As a host, LFCH provides transportation to pick up the Neighbors and bring them to our church campus. The church becomes their home for the night. They are welcomed with a hot meal, an opportunity for social time, showers and the assurance they have a safe warm place to get some much-needed rest. Morning comes early and neighbors wake up to breakfast and transportation back uptown to the Charlotte Transit Center/or Day Services Center.
LFCH will be hosting our Neighbors on three separate weekends this winter and we need your help! From overnight hosts, to preparing food or just offering a listening ear, please consider volunteering, no experience needed. Available dates are below.

The Set Up Team arrives at 1:00 PM to transition Lake Forest Church for the evening’s activities, a process that typically takes about two hours. The team leader is responsible for retrieving the storage shed key from the upstairs office and gathering supplies from the shed located behind the Box. Team members clear the Barn Door Room of all furniture, move it to the lobby, and install blackout curtains on the windows. They then set up twelve cots, each topped with a sleeping pad, a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, a pillow, and two blankets. To complete the welcome, a towel, washcloth, Blessing Bag, and welcome note are placed on each bed. Finally, the team prepares the Conference Room by setting thirty places for dinner with centerpieces and the best available dinnerware.
The Pick Up Team meets at the church at 4:20 PM to collect the 12-passenger vans and heads to the Roof Above Day Services Center in Charlotte. Drivers are required to remain outside the center while an intake volunteer provides a list of neighbors for transport. Once neighbors are on board, drivers notify the Evening Hosts of the final guest count and gender makeup.
The following morning, the Return Team arrives at 6:30 AM to collect keys and move the vans to the front of the building. They perform a head count against the manifest and depart at 7:05 AM to return neighbors to the Day Services Center. Once the trip is complete, the vans are returned to their designated ministry locations and the keys are delivered to the church office.
Evening Hosts serve from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, acting as the primary points of hospitality by welcoming neighbors and providing a formal orientation to the space. They manage the shower sign-up sheet and eat dinner with the neighbors to provide social connection. Before departing, Evening Hosts brief the Overnight Hosts on guest composition and any special medical or safety needs.
The two Overnight Hosts arrive by 8:30 PM and remain on-site until 7:30 AM. At least one host must remain alert throughout the night to ensure the safety of the neighbors and their belongings. Overnight Hosts manage lights out at 10:00 PM and perform a gentle wake-up call at 6:15 AM to ensure everyone is ready for breakfast and departure.
The Meal Team will to deliver a home-cooked dinner to the church by 5:00 PM. Menus should favor soft foods due to dental considerations and must include vegetarian and pork-free options.
Dinner Servers set up the drink station at the Kunu Bar, serve the meal with respect, and clean the kitchen and conference room afterward.
The Activity Team arrives at 6:00 PM until 9PM to provide entertainment or pampering services, such as board games, crafts, manicures, etc.
In the morning, the Breakfast Team arrives by 6:30 AM to serve a hot continental meal for approximately twenty people.
Additionally, a Lunch Team provides twelve individual bagged lunches, which are distributed to neighbors as they depart for the day.
The Tear Down Team arrives at 6:45 AM and must complete their tasks by 8:00 AM to return the church to its normal state, in preparation for Sunday morning services beginning at 8:05am. They strip the beds, sorting the laundry, disinfect cots and sleeping pads with Lysol, and return all equipment to the storage shed. This team also vacuums the rooms, cleans the bathrooms, and resets all lobby and classroom furniture according to provided photos.
Once the facility is clean, the Laundry Team collects the dirty linens from under the stairs and delivers them to Hope Haven in Charlotte to be laundered.
